Global Communications BenchmarkingGlobal Communications is not the only company who had to make serious decisions that would affect not only the company, but the consumers as well. Competition is very high no matter what company it is. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to conduct generic benchmarking in order to identify solutions to issues faced by Global. The companies that were selected were AT&T/Cingular, DELL, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Sprint/Nextel, and Verizon.Since competition is very high, companies need to strategize or perform cost-cutting plans in order for the company to be one of the top. All the companies that the team researched, has been in business for several years, overcome several encountered obstacles similar to those of Global, and have done generic benchmarking.Each team member was first required to select two companies that faced issues that were similar to the issues Global faced. Then a synopsis was prepared for each company that was selected, which included the issue the company faced, the company response to the issue, and the outcome of the company's response. Finally, the information from the synopses was used to write an analysis that contains key course concepts and to compare and contrast the practice of each company related to those concepts.Individual Benchmarking Company SynopsesAT&T/Cingular WirelessAT&T Wireless and Cingular Wireless were both struggling at the onset of 2004. Early in the year, AT&T experienced problems adding new subscribers due to a software glitch in a new system that was designed to improve customer service. AT&T also lost more customers than it gained when number portability came into effect. Cingular is looking for ways to improve as well. Cingular was the second largest cellular carrier, looking for ways to improve and grow in an over-crowded wireless market.The second and third largest U.S. wireless companies eventually announced a merge. AT&T Wireless agreed payment of $41 billion from Cingular Wireless for a full buyout. This deal "would be a boon for Atlanta based Cingular's efforts to cut costs, fill service gaps and expand its spectrum or radio frequency in several key U.S. markets, thus enabling it to offer wireless internet access at broadband speed" (Associated Press, 2004). How would this merge benefit both companies?CEO and President of Cingular Wireless, Stan Sigman said, "This combination is expected to create customer benefits and growth prospects neither company could have achieved on its own and will mean better coverage, improved reliability, enhanced call quality and a wide array of new and innovative services" (Associated Press, 2004).
