Glycolic acid is a group of chemicals known as alpha hydroxyl acids or fruit acids. It is mainly derived from sugar cane, and hence it is a natural product. The citric acid found in oranges and other citrus fruits also come under the same division as glycolic acids. The glycolic acid acne treatment can be effectively used to treat some cases of acne.

Glycolic acid is mostly used in cosmetic forms rather than industrial. It is usually used as a skin exfoliant and a moisturizer. Some proponents of glycolic acid state that the products which contain less than 10% concentration of glycolic acid is rendered useless. The government considers the use of glycolic acid over the 10% concentration can prove to be a dangerous material and this is why cosmetic firms do not want to risk increasing the concentrations in their products for the fear of responsibility for any adverse skin reactions.

Glycolic acid contains high acidity levels but is easily soluble; this is why it works well as an exfoliating agent. When it is applied on the skin as a part of an exfoliating cream, the glycolic acid acne treatment goes under the upper damaged layers of the skin and eliminates the substance that is not allowing the dead skin to be shed off from the skin. The dead skin is burned off with the help of chemicals, the other elements of the cream carries the individual flakes of skin away and the rinse of water neutralizes the acid remaining of the face.

The glycolic acid, as mentioned before, is a chemical exfoliant which is found in low concentration in many over-the-counter face washes, moisturizers, toners and many other cosmetic products.
