The lines that define good and evil are not written in black and white; these lines tend to blur into many shades of grey allowing good and evil to intermingle with each another in a single human being. Man is not inherently good or evil but they are born innocent without any values or sense of morality until people impart their philosophies of life to them. In the words of John Locke:
Let us then suppose the mind to be, as we say, white paper void of all characters, without any ideas. How comes it to be furnished? Whence comes it by that vast store which the busy and boundless fancy of man has painted on it with an almost endless variety? Whence has it all the materials of reason and knowledge? To this I answer, in one word, from experience (Locke, 1690/1947, bk. II, chap. 1, p.26).

Humans have the capacity to do good as well as evil yet society expects everyone to stay on their separate sides not willing to cross any boundaries over antagonistic/opposing side. Peter goes up to Ender's bed thinking Ender is asleep, and whispers, “Ender, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I know how it feels, I'm your brother, I love you.” (Card, 15). Peter is often times seen as cruel, apathetic, and incapable of loving others because he has committed innumerable sadistic acts towards Ender, and animals. However, he does love Ender and it would not be beneficial for Peter to try to manipulate Ender in his sleep. People can do good things with bad intentions and contrariwise. Peter wanted to save the world from self-destruction so that he could have control, “Locke's influence with the intelligentsia to accomplish something noteworthy. It forestalled a really vicious war that could have lasted for decades.” (Card, 311). The “Locke proposal” that Pete proposes, under the pseudonym Locke, saves mankind from the League war. Every human being has done good and bad in their lifetime. Peter has done good for the world as well as bad, “Peter pouring out the story of his crimes and his kindnesses.” (Card,323).
