Gout is one of oldest form of arthritis that is documented in medicine. It creates a throbbing and inflammation in the sufferer joints. The Egyptians were the first to identify Gout and it was later recognized by the Hippocrates in the fifth century BC, who referred to it as “the unwalkable disease” (Simkin & Nuki, 2006,). Over the course of history, gout has been concomitant lavish amount of liquor and foods. Gout was known as a “monarchs or rich men disease” (John Hopkins Medicine) in early centuries because it was related to a way of life that only the rich could afford. If left untreated, “uric acid can build up, forming sharp, needle-like urate crystals in a joint or surrounding tissue that cause pain, inflammation and swelling" (Mayo Clinic).
Furthermore, the lifestyle that makes individuals more prone to gout have become common. Traditional Asian diets, based on rice and vegetables, are low in dietary purines and the occurrence of gout is rare. This diet can be compared to westernized diets that largely has meats and certain seafood (scallops and herring) that are known for causing gout. Furthermore, due to increasing middle class in the world, gout has been occurring more worldwide.
The signs and symptoms of gout are almost always acute, occurring suddenly often late at night and devoid of warning to an individual. Example of a gout attack is: excruciating pains and soreness in the joint(s). The pain is started from the big toe or the ankle because of the formation of uric acid in the joint(s) (M. Doherty). Gout can affect any bone in the body. For example, the knee, foot or ankle joint can be affected. Gout pain is utmost severe within the first 12 to 24 hours after it occurs.
