Great Essay

1350 words - 6 pages

"Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone...just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had" - In the story The Great Gatsby Nick Carraway quotes his fathers wise words from his childhood. One could assume that this quote lets us know that Nick was more economically stable than others in his younger years and this is why he advises him to think of that before he criticizes anyone below him. This quote may have an impact on the way Nick treats others and how he carries himself. Throughout the Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald uses Nick Carraway to narrorate what he observes while he stays in New York during the exotic Roaring Twenties. Nick witnesses alcoholism, affairs, murder, racism, and crime. Nick Carraway is an admirable character, he displays examples of honesty, optimism, and sarcasm, which one may feel are positive traits to have.
One may think that honesty is an admirable trait to have. "I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known" admitted Nick. One may observe that this makes Nick an honest person and maybe even trustworthy. Just about everyone needs honesty sometime whether or not because no one likes to wonder about things, society thrives off of others opinions. This trait makes Nick charming and one may enjoy the irony of Nick being honest, about being honest. Further in the Great Gatsby Daisy introduces a Nick to the dishonest and sly Jordan Baker. Jordan and Nick have a common ground which allows them to enjoy one another's company. After Gatsby's death Nick decides to check in with Jordan to clear the air."You said a bad driver was only safe until she met another bad driver? Well, I met another bad driver, didn't I? I mean it was careless of me to make such a wrong guess. I thought you were rather an honest, straightforward person. I thought it was your secret pride " claimed Jordan. This quote adds to the dreary feeling one may hav felt after Gatsby's death. This tells us that Nick may be an honest person, but is he being honest with himself. Jordan is claiming that Nick has lied to her about his feelings toward her, she feels deceived mainly because Nick claimed he was an honest person, but maybe he wasn't lying, maybe he just doesn't want to act on his feelings. Honesty is a value and a good trait to have. Honesty has a drawback though, one may not know how much honesty can hurt, but in the end it heals people.Honesty is a wakeup call to some and sometimes one may need a wakeup call, or an enlightening statement that you know is not deceitful. Honesty is morals, sincerity, ethics, and so much more which is why one may classify it as an honorable trait.
Nick Carraway has a quirky way of words which one may classify as sarcasm. Sarcasm is a humorous display of truth, and it is also a display of wit. "It's about the butler's nose. Do you want to hear about the butler's nose?" asked Daisy - "That's why I came over tonight" remarked Nick. This quote is an...
