Greatest College Basketball Coach Of All Time

2435 words - 10 pages

Lets say that you are the parent of a prized basketball star that is preparing to finish his senior year of high school and play basketball at the collegiate level. As a parent, you would probably want whatever coach your son plays for to take the best care of him as possible, and guide him on his pursuit of dream chasing. Without a doubt, the best coach to have your son play for would be Kentucky Wildcats coach John Calipari. John Calipari is the greatest college basketball coach of all time. He is the best college basketball coach because, most importantly, he puts his players first, he has an unbelievable reputation for sending young athletes the NBA, he is a great recruiter, he has proven that he is a winner, and he has accomplished an incredible amount of accomplishments at such a young age.
As a parent, the main component that you look for in a coach is that he cares for your child and wants your child to reach his maximum potential, both on and off the court. John Calipari is, without a doubt, one of the few coaches in the NCAA who truly cares for his players and puts their well- being in front of everything else.
John Calipari is universally known as a coach that cares more about his players than himself. There is an incredible amount of evidence that supports the idea of John Calipari being a “players-first” type of coach. First off, lets start with a quote from one of the most respectable men in the entire world, former United States President Bill Clinton. While talking about the subject of coach Calipari, President Clinton once said that, "If you are a college basketball fan like I am, you’ll understand why I’ve long admired John Calipari’s leadership style. While no coach treasures a win more than John, this terrific book reveals his greater purpose—to lead his young players to better lives, and then challenge them to give back to others” (Players). The book that President Clinton is referring to is entitled Players First: Coaching from the Inside Out, written by John Calipari himself and Michael Sokolove (Players). If a coach writes a book about putting his players first, and a President of the United States of America even says he cares about his players, he must actually care about his players. In the YouTube video called All Access Kentucky- the Recruiting Process, John Calipari really explains how important it is to take care of his players and prepare them for the rest of their lives. In this video John Calipari says that all the parents care about is that their babies are taken care of (All-Access). According to the Chicago Tribune, one of Caliparis most well-known prodigies, Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose, once said that "He (Calipari) always wanted me to be great," (Ryan). Rose also stated that "He makes sure you're disciplined out there. Being a new player, going to college for the first time, everything is new to you. If it weren't for a good coach, you'd be lost out there” (Ryan). These statements from not just...
