Greenhouse Effect Essay

966 words - 4 pages

This earth is getting older and older. Can you imagine what life would be like if the temperature on earth keeps on rising due to the excessive amount of heat trapped in the atmosphere? The atmosphere plays an important role in our daily life. It keeps the earth warm which is also known as the greenhouse effect. Due to ozone depletion and global warming, the atmosphere is not able to function normally. Because of human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and clearing of forests, it intensified the greenhouse effect and caused global warming. It is important for us to prevent the earth from further damage caused by the greenhouse effect. To save this earth, we should know what ...view middle of the document...

Carbon dioxide enters the atmosphere through burning fossil fuels (coal, natural gas and oil), solid waste, trees and wood products, and also as a result of certain chemical reactions. The atmosphere is mostly oxygen and nitrogen, but it is about 0.035% carbon dioxide and it absorbs infrared radiation very strongly. The warm Earth emits mostly infrared radiation and CO2 absorbs infrared radiation, so most of the infrared radiation from the surface of the Earth is absorbed by CO2 in the atmosphere. Other greenhouse gases such as CFCs, nitrous oxide, methane and water vapor also does the same effect to our Earth.
Methane is produced during the production and transport of coal, natural gas, and oil. Methane emissions also result from livestock and other agricultural practices and by the decay of organic waste in municipal solid waste landfills. Nitrous oxide is emitted during agricultural and industrial activities, as well as during combustion of fossil fuels and solid waste. Fluorinated gases are emitted by industrial processes or from gases that are produced from aerosol spray, refrigerators, or air conditioners (CFC). All of these gases are mainly caused by human activities.
The increasing greenhouse gases that are accumulated in the atmosphere which are contributed by human activities warm up when it is absorbing radiation. The warm gases in the atmosphere also emit infrared radiation. The warmer they are and the more concentration there is, the more radiation they emit. Some of the infrared radiation from the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is absorbed by the Earth, warming it a little more. During the entire 20th century, the average global temperature increased by about 0.6 degrees Celsius. Using computer climate models, scientists estimate that by the year 2100 the average global temperature will increase by 1.4 degrees to 5.8 degrees Celsius. Due to the increase of greenhouse gases in the...

The Greenhouse Effect

1576 words - 6 pages Global warming, also known as the greenhouse effect, has been a trending topic in the recent years, but global warming has been around for a long time. Earth has warmed at a high rate over the last hundred years and particularly over the last two decades. Burning large amounts of fossil fuels; coal, oil, natural gas is a root cause of global warming. The greenhouse effect are gases in our atmosphere that hold in heat, such as carbon dioxide

How recycling reduces greenhouse effect

896 words - 4 pages The process which infrared radiation is given by the atmosphere that will increase a planet’s temperature is greenhouse effect. Professionals give the name of greenhouse effect because of the warming air inside a greenhouse compared with the outside one. Also, it will bring about climate changes such as global warming and the pollutions will become more serious. Greenhouse effect has been a significant issue since the technologies around the

Global Warming: The Greenhouse Effect

1950 words - 8 pages life today is human life itself. Humans unknowingly cause global warming with the amount of pollution and other harmful gases that contribute to the Greenhouse Effect. Many of the factors causing these greenhouse gases that are destructive to our atmosphere are solvable. Some of these causes are very simple like transportation, industrial effects, and lack of education. A single individual cannot be blamed for the world pollution nor can a single

Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect

586 words - 2 pages Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect The greenhouse effect, in environmental science, is a popular term for the effect that certain variable constituents of the Earth's lower atmosphere have on surface temperatures. It has been known since 1896 that Earth has been warmed by a blanket of gasses (This is called the "greenhouse effect."). The gases--water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4)--keep ground temperatures at a

Global Warming: The Greenhouse Effect By Asif

550 words - 2 pages One of Earth's major danger issues currently is the 'Global Warming' or 'The Greenhouse Effect'. The Greenhouse Effect is the process by which the Earth is made warm enough for all living things to survive. But because the Earth is becoming warmer than it used to be, we are heading towards possible danger that may cause all living things on the earth to perish. This slow rising of temperature is known as the 'Global Warming'. The Earth's

Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect

937 words - 4 pages What is the "greenhouse effect?" It is the behavior of solar radiation when it interacts with gasses in the Earth's atmosphere. The Sun gives off a wide spectrum of energy which we classify according to its wavelength. Among the types of energy given off by the sun are ultraviolet (UV), visible and infrared (IR) wavelengths. UV is short wavelength high-energy radiation, visible is mid-wavelength, mid-energy radiation

The Greenhouse Effect –The Importance&Effects

1264 words - 5 pages The importance of the greenhouse effect was just conceived in the mid-twentieth century. "For billions of years, cosmic forces shaped Earth, and land and air coevolved at an almost inconceivably slow pace to create a climate in which human beings and other creatures could flourish." (Franscesca Lyman). Now, for the first time, humanity has the power to change the global climate. By releasing the huge amounts of carbon stored in fossil fuels over

Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect

1803 words - 7 pages Global Warming is due to the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is a naturally occurring process that aids in heating the Earth's surface and atmosphere. It results from the fact that certain atmospheric gases, such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane, are able to change the energy balance of the planet by being able to absorb longwave radiation from the Earth's surface. Without the greenhouse effect, life on

Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect

745 words - 3 pages Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect Human induced climate change resulting from an enhanced greenhouse effect is probably the greatest environmental threat facing the world today. Specifically, the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide may be classified as the primary culprit. As a result of greenhouse gases entering the upper levels of the earth's atmosphere, it diminishes or breaks down the earth's Ozone layer. With this
