"A group is a collection of two or more people who work with one another regularly to achieve common goals" (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2005, p. 262). A homogeneous group will perform better in the beginning. They are a group of people similar in diversity. This can hurt the group in the end due to the lack of diversity. A heterogeneous group will prove to be the stronger team due to the cultural diversity within the group. The group with people of different ages, cultures, genders, and experiences."A team is a small group of people with complementary skills who work actively together to achieve a common purpose for which they hold themselves collectively accountable" (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2005, p. 262). A homogeneous group will develop as a team quickly due to the similarities everybody has in the group. Heterogeneous groups usually take a little time before they become a strong high performing team. Their differences will get in the way in the beginning until they figure out the best way to perform.The groups in my organization are full of diversity. One group usually consists of a superintendent, quality supervisor, production supervisor, process technician, and a quality technician. The age, field of work, and experience is all different. The groups lack one major thing, teamwork. Some employees in my organization feel like he or she is being attacked if someone else has a better idea than the other. This decreases the amount of teamwork and productivity within the group.A group can never become a team without communication. Regardless of everybody's differences, people should work together and communicate all their knowledge with the group. Communication can build a strong backbone for the development of the team. Communication is a common problem in organizations. Some people do not realize the importance of communication. Communication is often overlooked and forgot about. Communicating to another person is often forgotten due to all the other responsibilities going on in the organization. Top priority in all organizations should be communication. Communication should also be top priority in all groups working together.Demographic Characteristics"Demographic characteristics may serve as the basis of stereotypes that obscure individual differences and prevent people from getting to know others as individuals and accurately assessing their performance potential" (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2005, p. 123). A team leader might assign tasks for the team members in the group. When he or she assigns these tasks, he or she might assign them unfairly. One person might look at another without getting to know him or her and think, "she does not know anything about the mechanics of the system." She might know more about the mechanics than everybody else in the group. Due to this unfair treatment within group, the group will not perform to its highest possible performance.
