U.S congress woman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head. This happened in Arizona, a state where guns are allowed in open carry meaning everyone has option to carry a gun as long as it is not concealed. When this congress woman was shot, the shooter became enraged. After shooting 3 more people his gun got jammed, this is when a civilian jumped him and stopped his irrational behavior. This brings up many different opinions on whether guns should be allowed or taken away. John Luik author of the article “The Increased Availability of Guns Reduces Crime” and Sabina Thaler the author of the article “The Claim of Increased Gun Availability Reduces Crime is Unfounded” are two examples of people having different opinions on such a debatable topic. Both authors talk about guns taking people’s lives, Thalers article focuses on guns taking innocent people’s lives, and Luiks article focuses on guns being innocent people’s protection.
Many gun supporters will say that more guns bring down the crime rate. These same believers will give facts stating that the more guns in a state, the less likely gun owners will use them. “The chances of innocent people being the victims of violent crime, including murder, decrease—not increase—when access to guns is made easier” (Luik). Luik emphasizes that guns will not make any innocent people killers, it will make crime and death rates go down. They argue that the states with the lowest crime rates are the same states that have a higher gun ownership rate than any other state.
Gun admirers have statistics that will prove their side on guns saving lives. According to one study by Lott “… for each additional year that laws allowing people to carry concealed handguns were on the books, robberies declined by two per cent, rapes by two per cent and murders by three per cent. If all states that did not permit carrying concealed handguns had allowed them in 1992, for instance, there would have been 1,839 fewer murders, 3,727 rapes and 10,990 aggravated assaults.” All of these statistics help gun believers show that guns will help bring our crime rate down, and save lives. These statistics also help advocate that guns can be a big protection for innocent people. Pro- gun believers will say that criminals will always have guns, so if innocent people have them as well, it is less likely for innocent people to be hurt.
One strong point for gun owners is the shootings in schools against numerous victims. One shooting was in Pearl, Miss., and another in Edinboro, Pa. Each of those states is allowed open carry. In both of those shootings, the killer came to a halt because citizens had guns. If citizens didn’t have guns more killers could have continued to murder people because they would have had no way to protect themselves. These gun supporters will be the firsts to say that because those people had guns, those killings didn’t become mass murders.
On the opposing side, some others may say that the equation of more guns...
