Sometimes, children are born with difficulties and are classified as “children with special needs.” Such difficulties can include, but are not limited to: sensory difficulties such as visual, auditory, and speech problems. Others problems include learning disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, more commonly known as ADHD (Feldman 210).
One type of sensory difficulty, visual impairment. The human eye is like a camera that collects, focuses, and transmits light through a lens to create an image of its surroundings. In a camera, the image is created on film or an image sensor, and a human eye, the image is created on the retina, or a thin layer of light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Like a camera, the human eye controls the amount of light that enters the eye. The iris, which is the circular and colored part of the eye, controls how much light enters through the pupil. The pupil will close up when exposed to bright light, and open up when it is dark out (“Visual Impairment,”). Approximately 19 million, which is less than one percent of children, are visually impaired (“Visual impairment and blindness,”). Visual impairment has both a legal and an educational meaning. It can be specifically defined as blindness. Blindness is visual activity that is below 20/200 after it is corrected. What this basically means is that these particular children have difficulty seeing something at 20 feet what is normally seen fairly easily at 200 feet (Feldman 210). A person is considered to be visually impaired when the vision is no better than 20/70 after their vision is corrected.
Another type of sensory difficulty found in children is auditory problems. One type of auditory disorder is Auditory Processing Disorder, or APD. It can also be referred to as Central Auditory Processing Disorders, or CAPD. The term auditory processing is often used loosely by most people in many different ways to mean many different things. In most cases, many of the ways people interpret the term are incorrect. In its greatest sense, APD refers to the central nervous system uses auditory information. The central nervous system is immense, and is also responsible for various traits, such as memory, attention, and also language. To avoid confusing APD with other disorders that affect one’s mind, it is very important to express that APD is an auditory deficit that is not the end product of other higher-order various disorders (Bellis). Auditory impairments can cause many types of social and academic problems since a majority of peer interaction involves informal conversation. One to two percent of the school-age population is affected by hearing loss, and goes beyond not hearing enough. In some cases, hearing is only impaired at only certain pitches, or frequencies.
