Nutritional Report for a male football playerIntroductionThe aim of this report is to construct and assess a chosen athlete's dietary report. The athlete chosen in this report is a 20 year old male, University 1st team football player that weighs 94kg and is 188 cm tall.Individual energy expenditure needs to be assessed in order to establish whether or not the subject in this report in consuming the correct diet for football. In November when this study was being performed the subject was in their competition phase, therefore the weekly exercise or energy expenditure was as follows: Monday- fitness 8:00-9:00pm, football training/skills 9:00-10:00pm, Wednesday- Game 2:15 pm, Thursday- training and skills 8:00-9:00 pm, Saturday- Game 2:15 pm.Football is a high intensity sport the definition of a team sports like football; is a sport in which two or more athletes work together on a common playing area to defeat an opposing group of competitors (Burke et al, 2006). These types of sports rely upon all three of the body energy systems; however it is the adenosine triphosphate phosphocreatine (ATP/PC) and aerobic systems that are the major energy contributors. The high intensity muscle bursts during a football game like jumping, kicking, sprinting or shooting are supplied by the ATP/PC systems (Burke et al, 2006). Therefore the lower intensity less metabolically demanding aspects of football that occur between the high intensity bursts are supplied by the aerobic system, the aerobic system also helps in recovery by replenishing the ATP and CP.The athlete will be asked to completed the dietary report and an assessment of the 3 macronutrients (Protein, Carbohydrates and Fats) and 3 chosen micronutrients (Iron, Vitamin A and Zinc) will be performed, this will therefore give the athlete a personal detailed analysis of their diet and consequently allow them to adjust and adapt their diet to become more efficient and effective for their sport.One of the three macronutrients is carbohydrate (CHO); it is a type of organic molecule consisting of a carbon (C) back bone with attached hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) atoms. Carbohydrate can be broken down and classified into simple and complex carbohydrates; these classifications are listed in Table 1. Simple carbohydrates are made up of only one or two sugar molecules linked together, whereas complex carbohydrates are made of longer more complex chains of sugars. Carbohydrates in the body are crucial for optimum sport performance; it is the main source of energy in the body, it also has to be present in the body in order to metabolise fats at the fast rates needed to support the caloric demand of exercise. The higher this intensity of exercise the more reliance on carbohydrates is needed for the working muscles. The nervous system also relies upon carbohydrate as its main source of energy via the blood stream, this is because the nerve cells can't store carbohydrate like muscle cells.
