Even though adults decide their food choices, food pattern consumption starts at an early age and improvement in the nations diet starts with children.How does one know if they are eating healthy or not? Choosing foods for a healthy diet does not mean giving up favorite foods. A diet rich in healthy foods is important for everyone, , whatever their age. What we eat can make a dramatic impact to our health and introducing healthy eating habits at a young age will guide children through a lifetime of far less weight and healthy problems.For most children eating whatever they wants whenever they want makes adjusting to a new way of eating difficult for both the parent and the child. There are many positive reasons for keeping yourself and our children on a lifestyle of healthy eating. In the article printed by the Nemours Foundation (2007) it is stated that “Obesity is becoming a common problem in the United States. Almost two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, and more than half of them get too little physical activity”. People need to become aware that it is essential to start changing our nation’s dietary problems and this begins with our children.The USDA introduced the first Food Guide Pyramid in 1992 and until 2005 it had never been changed. When viewing the new Food Pyramid one will see colorful stripes that represent the five food groups which are grains, vegetables, fruits, milk and meats and beans. The staircase along the left side of the pyramid is there to remind people to be more active so they can burn calories which helps promote a healthy weight. USDA Secretary Mike Johanns said. "Many Americans can dramatically improve their overall health by making modest improvements to their diets and by incorporating regular physical activity into their daily lives (Washington Post, 2005, p. A11).When working towards living a healthy lifestyle a balanced diet should be incorporated in over all health. Eating well will improve your chances of living a longer more productive life. One of the main points to focus on is portion control. Grieger (2006) states that “virtually every kind of food is now larger than it used to be: Muffins are 333 percent larger; pasta servings, 450 percent larger; and bagels, 200 percent bigger than they were 30 years ago”. This proves that over time society has accepted bigger portions which lead to over eating, we all know that over eating on a continuous basis makes up a majority of the obesity problem plaguing the nation today.Taking in the daily recommendation of vitamins and minerals will allow the body to be healthy and strong however; in some situations a person might need to take a multi- vitamin to help fill their daily regimen of proper vitamins and minerals.
