Heart Assignment

907 words - 4 pages

The HeartIn an average human body there is about 5 litres of blood. In an average human day, the average human heart pumps about 100,000 times and that average human heart pumps about 7,000 litres of blood around that humans body every day… Average? I think not.Blood contains Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.Plasma- Contains serum, fibrinogen. Plasma makes up 55% of blood. Plasma is mostly water (93%).Serum- Is the blood plasma without the fibrinogen.Fibrinogen- Is a soluble glycoprotein (protein that contains glycan) and is made by the liver.Red Blood Cells- Contain Haemoglobins (an iron-containing protein, which transports oxygen). Red Blood Cells make up 45% of your blood. Red Blood Cells live for about 120 days. You have 700 Red Blood Cells for every White Blood Cell.White Blood Cells- are cells that have the job of defending the body against both infectious diseases and foreign materials. White Blood Cells live for a week. White Blood Cells and Platelets make up less than 1% of your blood.Platelets- Are responsible for clotting the blood when the skin is damaged. They change fibrinogen into fibrin. This fibrin creates a sticky barricade which red blood cells are caught and gathered, which then stops more blood from leaving the damaged area and also helps to prevent bacteria from entering the damaged area.3.1. When first giving blood you need to fill out a health-based questionnaire, but you have to be 16 years or over to donate. You also get free drinks while you wait!2. You next get a blood sample taken to see if you have a high enough haemoglobin level. If healthy, you get to begin the process of giving blood.3. You get to sit in chairs and have your blood pressure taken, and if you are healthy, then a nurse continues the blood donation process.4. A sterilised needle is inserted into a vein in your arm (the arm that is not used the most). Approximately 500-750mL of blood is taken from your body, the blood is constantly kept moving to ensure that the red blood cells, plasma, platelets and white blood cells are kept alive.5. Once the donation has finished the needle is removed and a bandaid is placed over where the needle was.6. You rest in the chair for 5-10 minutes. Once you feel fine you are offered a snack and a refreshment to replace the energy lost and it makes you feel better because you get MORE free food.7. You leave and come back when you feel like donating blood again.4. I think that it is a good idea to give blood because one day a person might need my blood type (A+) because they were in an accident. Although my blood type is common, I would like to think that when I'm ever in an accident there was someone that donated some blood, so that I could use it.That is why I believe it is a good idea to give blood.6. 1. The 2 top chambers (the Atria) relax. Deoxygenated blood, from the body, fills the right atrium. Oxygen rich blood from the lungs fills the left Atrium.2. Both of the atria contract,...
