The Greeks held many festivals for their gods, one of which was Thargelia. Thargelia is a festival of apollo held in athens during late may. It was a vegetation festival and a ritual expiation of communal guilt. The first day of the festival was the catharic rite of the pharmakos (scapegoat). One or two people of either gender, preferably criminals or outcast, were selected as the scapegoat. They were fed, led through town, then expelled from the city. In times of great calamity they might be thrown off a cliff, cast into the sea, or sacrificed on a funeral pyre. All this helps cleanse the town for the harvest season. The Greeks also sacrifice the first grains to the gods to officially start the harvest season. The festival concluded with a procession and the official registration of the adopted persons. Another festival was Anthesteria. Anthesteria was a festival held in honor of dionysus the god of wine and the theatre. Most of what's known is found in Athens, where it was particularly important. Anthesteria was a three day festival in the greek month of Anthesterion (february-march). The name means festival of flowers but thats not what it is. The festival is mainly about the opening of new wine and placating the spirits of the dead. The evening on the first day, called Pithoigia (Jar-opening), casks of the vintage were taken to the sanctuary of Dionysus in the Marshes and libations were offered to the god of wine and sampled by all the household.
