United Statessoccer league though not as popular as the major European soccer leagues has greatly grown over thepast few years. For a long period, the American soccer has lag behind other sports such as rugby, basketball as well as the famous American football. However, of late, the league is fast gaining popularity with the influx of stars coming from the prestigious European leagues (Jose, 12). These stars include the converted David Beckham who arrived from Real Madrid football club to join LA Galaxy, Tim Cahill, and Thierry Henry who is playing for New Yorks Red Bulls after joining from the mighty Barcelona football club. In addition, more stars superrumored to be in their way to American league such as Frank Lampard and many more(Brown, 34).
Current state of the league and the game in the United States
The above listed stars areamong the few stars that have enlightened the Americantop-flight leagues. These stars have remarkably changed the face of the America soccer league where currently fans are filling the stadiums as opposed to the past days where teams where playing in empty stadiums. Furthermore, the future of the league is promising as fans attachment increases with their respective clubs and several top-flight teams are planning to relocate or expand their current stadiums to bigger one that can accommodate large number of fans. Additionally, the bright future is evident as witnessed by the recent involvement of the top European clubs playing either the post league or pre-season tournaments at the American stadium (Desbordes, 9-11).
The most resent post-season tournament was when Chelsea and Manchester city played at the Yankee Stadium. In addition, top teams such as Real Madrid football club, Inter Milan football club, and AC Milan football club, Paris Saint Germaine, Everton, and Chelsea all took part of the pre-seasontournament that happened in the U.S.A. They played at different stadiums across the country drawing large number of supporters. These are good indicators that the future Americansoccer league will be more competitive as these matches alter the citizens’ mentality on soccer in totality. Based on the overall fan attendance of the league in the last season, the league registered a remarkable average of 18,356 supporters across the matches played by the top teams(Markovits and Steven, 32-36).
The good news is that, this figureexpected to increase making the US soccer league to have a brighter future. In addition, NBC sports network is responsible for broadcasting majority of the league matches after signing a massive $65,000 deal that allowed them to air the matches live. Moreover, the league rating is not that bad as the recent ratings portray an improvement from the previous one. Though not rated highly as the European leagues, there is a lot of positive aspect of the recent rating because it indicates that good timesare ahead.
