William Henry "Bill" Gates (more commonly known as "Bill" Gates) is an American philanthropist, investor, programmer and role model. William Henry Gates used to be the chief executive and chairman one of the world's most successful personal computer software company, Microsoft which he co-founded with Paul Allen(Gawker. (). William Henry Gates). William Henry Gates was also consistently ranked by Forbes magazine as the number one world wealthiest from 1995 to 2009 with the exception of 2008 when he was ranked third. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires List, Gates is the world's richest person in 2013, a position that he last held on the list in 2007 (Forbes. 2011).
"Bill" Gates was born on October 28, 1955 in Seattle Washington. His father, William H. Gates, was a prominent lawyer and his mother, Mary Maxwell Gates, served on the board of directors for First Interstate Bancsystem and the United Way. When he was younger his family strongly encouraged competition and one visitor noted that regardless of what the game or sport was there was always a reward for winning and a penalty for loosing, which could have developed "Bill" Gates all or nothing attitude. Bill was a voracious reader as a child, spending many hours poring over reference books such as the encyclopedia. Around the age of 11 or 12, Bill's parents began to have concerns about his behaviour. He was doing well in school, but he seemed bored and withdrawn at times. His parents worried he might become a loner.
At the age of 13 his parents enrolled him in the Lakeside School which was a highly exclusive and expensive private school. This was partially because Bills parents were worried about his social habits. A year later ,after his enrolment, when he was in the eighth grade, the Mothers Club at the school used proceeds from Lakeside School's rummage sale to buy a Teletype Model 33 ASR terminal and a block of computer time on a General Electric computer for the school's students (Jones,Q. (2010)). Bill took a very passionate interest in programming for the revolutionary system and was even excused from maths classes to pursue his new found passion. The first successfully functioning program that he developed was a modified version of a tic tac toe game that allowed people to play against the computer. Gates was fascinated by the machine and how it would always execute software code perfectly. When he reflected back on that moment, he said, "There was just something neat about the machine."( Gates, Bill 1996), After the Mothers Club donation was exhausted, he and other students sought time on different systems.
One of these systems was a PDP-10 which belonged to Computer CentreCorporation , which banned several students from using the system again (Patricia Brennan Demuth (2007). Two of these students were Gateshimself as well as his future business partner Paul Allen. This ban lasted for the entirety of the following summer and was for exploiting certain bugs in the system...
