Life on Alcatraz Prison was not as bad as the people described it to be. For the prisoners Living on Alcatraz was similar to life on other American penitentiaries of the era. It wasn’t the brutal hellhole many movies made it look like it was.
Each prisoner swept his cell clean, dressed, and then stood ready for head count. Then all marches to the mess hall for break feast before moving on to work out in the docks in the laundry area, or out in any of the other buildings in the island.

He was also one of Alcatraz’s most famous and dangerous inmates. He was very well known and respected out in the real world and inside of Alcatraz.
Inmates in Alcatraz wore granted to only one visit a month and each visit had to be approved by the warden himself. No physical contact was allowed, and they had certain rules over what they could discuss. For example life in prison could not be discussed.
Alcatraz was so restricted that the gourds and other prison staff lived on the island with their family. The island had a bowling alley, a small convenience store, and a soda fountain shop for the younger island residents.
There are few escape attempts recorded but none of them are known to be fully successful. Over the twenty nine years the prison operated, thirty men, two that even tried to escape twice, wore involved in fourteen separate escape attempts.
Over the thirty men involved in the escape attempts, twenty three wore shot in action; six men wore shot and killed in the attempt, although to this day two men are presumed drowned and dead.
Officially, no one ever escaped successfully out of Alcatraz. To this day there are five prisoners that are listed as “missing and presumed drowned”
One time inside of Alcatraz a group of 4 inmates tried to escape. The names of these inmates wore Clarence Anglin, John Anglin, Frank Morris, and Allen West. It’s still a mystery over whether they made it out alive or if they drowned on the way out. But I believe it was a success.
Alcatraz was the most isolated prison in the United States at the time. But many inmates wore glad to be there, rather than being in any other prisons. Alcatraz was at first a military base that later turned into a prison, that’s what kind of influenced its isolation.
There are not many successful attempts out of Alcatraz. Not many prisoners wanted to escape....
