Mullah Muhammad Omar, the leader of the Afghanistan Taliban Regime and one of the most wanted men by the United States (U.S.) government. How does a man born to one of the poorest province become one of the most wanted men alive? The U. S. State Department is offering a reward up to ten million dollars for the capture of Mullah Omar. Omar is considered to be a man of mystery, who is highly respected, feared, and stubborn among his people. Omar is said to have ties with al-Qaeda, a known terrorist group that is responsible for September 11 attack. Omar is also suspected in a number of attacks that have occurred over the years, even though his whereabouts are unknown.
Mullah Omar was born in Oruzugan Province, Afghanistan in 1962. Omar studied in Islamic schools where he became devoted to Islam. While studying Islam, Omar became a “mullah” which is someone who shows pure devotion and understanding of the Islamic religion. Omar is described to be over six feet, with a black bushy beard, turban, and one eye. Omar lost his right eye when he was wounded with shrapnel fighting the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in December 1979.
Omar was attending school when the Soviet Union invaded. Omar left school to start his own jihad against the Soviets in the 1980’s. Many Afghani citizens fled to Pakistan seeking refuge from the war. With help sent by the U.S., Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom (U.K.), France, Israel, and Pakistan the Afghani people were able to defeat the Soviet Fortieth Army. The civil war caused more destruction to major cities like Kabul, then the war against the Soviets.
While tribe leaders fought for control of the country, Mullah Omar started his own war against them. Omar witnessed the rapes of two young boys, at the hands of one of the tribe leaders. This event prompted Omar to step in and end the fighting among the tribe leaders. Omar restored order to Afghanistan by using Shari’a law. Shari’a Law is pure Islamic Law, which follows the Qur’an and Sunnah. The Qur’an is the holy book to the Islamic religion. Sunnah is the teaching and saying of Prophet Mohammed, who is the most beloved and honored person in Islam. Shari’a is guidelines on how people should conduct themselves in both their personal and social life. Omar wanted to put a stop to the violence tribe leaders were committing against the Afghan people, but also to punish them for the atrocities they had committed. The men who followed Omar’s leadership would become the Taliban Regime of Afghanistan.
