Arthur Liebehenschel
The Holocaust has been called the most terrible catastrophe in modern history and also Shoah, a Hebrew word, meaning “a whirlwind of destruction.” By the end of World War II, two thirds of Jews were dead. The Nazis also murdered five to six million Gypsies, people with handicapped disabilities, Communists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals, labor unionists, political prisoners, and prisoners of war (Strahinich). The Holocaust was a tragedy that affected two races battling against each other; that same battle lived within Arthur Liebehenschel, making him a victim of circumstance.
Arthur Liebehenschel was born on November 25th, 1901 in Posen, Germany. While growing up, Arthur studied economics and pubic administration. His dream was to fight in the war, but he was too young to serve in World War II. In 1932, he joined the Nazi Party becoming the thirty-nine thousand two hundred and fifty-fourth person to join the Nazis. At the age of thirty-one, Arthur became a military officer in the Lichtenburg Concentration Camp. Two years later Arthur was transferred to a concentration camp called Auschwitz (“Arthur”). The Holocaust was known also as the mass murder of six millions of Jews by German Nazis during the time of World War II. The German police forced tens of thousands of Jews from their homes(History.com). Around seventy thousand Germans organized for mentally ill or disabled to be gassed to death in the so-called Euthanasia Program. Hitler put an end to the program in August 1941, though the killings of the disabled continued to happen in secrecy(“Auschwitz”). By 1945, some two hundred and seventy-five thousand people labeled as handicapped from all over Europe had been killed. In September 1941, everyone that was designated as a Jew was marked with a yellow star, making them open targets(History.com). Even though many followed Hitler they knew...
