1CharlesHomeworkWhen is there time for family responsibilities, to play sports, or to hangout with friends? Homework should not be assigned because it can cause reductions in health, can also create stress not only on the individual but also for the family, and is not as important as life lessons. Homework can cause health issues, such as headaches, sleep deprivation, and exhaustion. Homework also needs to serve a purpose or not be assigned at all, pointless homework can cause stress on families. Teachers should also be focused on teaching life lessons and ways to help their students excel in college and beyond.Homework should be reduced because it can cause health issues. A recent study shows too much homework can negatively affect kids, especially where family and activates matter (Parker). During this study 4,317 students from 10 high performing high schools in California were asked and 56% percent say that their homework load is a primary source of stress, 43% said that school in general was the main stressor and less than 1% said homework wasn't a main stressor (Parker). Students who sacrifice sleep time to do homework actually have more trouble understanding material (Levy).Family life is impacted when large amounts of homework are expected to be done each night. According to research , many wives " Feel like the worst mom in the world because their efforts to help their children lead to short tempers" (Opdyke). "Busy Work" , by it's very nature, discourages learning and instead promotes doing work simply to get points (Parker). A 2002 survey reported that 64% of students between the age of 6 and 8 have homework on any given day (Ponte). Homework can show parents what their child is learning in school and promote closeness between parent and child, but tension over homework is the evening scenario in many homes. Homework does nothing if the parent doesn't have the time to help their child with the homework. Free time is just as likely to create opportunities for unexpected learning.There is far more to an education than what happens in school (Gatto). Teachers that show genuine care and concern for their students can change a student's outlook on their educational career. To tie life lessons back into giving homework, there are points to justify homework, as in practicing a skill you just learned or one you still don't understand.
