Homework Should be Limited or Banned

What do you think when you hear the word, ‘Homework’? Do you think that homework is needed and should be a constant part of our lives, or do you think that homework is an unnecessary thing and should be limited? Homework should be limited or banned because homework does not have as much value as we think it does, there are several negative effects of homework, and the amount of unnecessary homework is much more than before.

First of all, homework does not have value. There is no correlation whatsoever between the amount of homework given and achievement for young students, and at the high school level the correlation is weak and disappears when ...view middle of the document...

First, Professor Harris Cooper says that doing more than 60 minutes of homework for middle school students, and more than 120 minutes of homework for high school students decreases test scores. This conclusion was drawn from an analysis of multiple studies (Myth Homework). Also, Boston College professor Curt Marling interviewed two dozen families. This means that even though effects like stress and family disruption may go away when homework is reduced to sensible amounts, more homework still has a factor in decreasing student achievement. Therefore, the negative effects of homework further decrease the overall value of homework.

One thing that we cannot ignore is that children, especially younger children, are getting more and more unnecessary homework than before. First of all, a 2004 national survey conducted by the University of Michigan found that the amount of time spent on homework had risen 51 percent since 1981. This increase was found mostly on 6-8 year olds (District Admin). This evidence irrefutably shows that young children are getting more and more homework; homework that is unnecessary and not recommended for their age. The opposing argument for this would be that this increase of homework for young children is a good thing. However, homework expert Harris Cooper states that homework for kids below 5th grade...
