Hormones are an essential part of life and growth, for both humans and plants. They are created by the eight different parts of Endocrine glands. They different parts are the adrenal gland, the hypothalamus, the pancreas, the parathyroid gland, the pineal gland, the pituitary gland, the reproductive glands, and the thyroid gland. There are also a few other places in your body that produce hormones, like the placenta in a woman. Hormones affect everything from your growth and development to your mood. Hormone levels may also change as you get older, or when you undergo a change in your body, like puberty or pregnancy.
The term hormone was first thought of in the 1900's. In the 1990’s, they also used dogs to do research about hormones. Psychologists William Bayliss and Ernest Starling came up with the name for the chemicals that control so many different parts of our bodies: hormones.
During a certain point in someone’s life, like when we go through puberty or menopause, hormone levels change. Puberty in girls begins when a hormone called gonadotropin-releasing hormone reaches the pituitary gland. It also releases the luteinizing hormone and the follicle-stimulating hormone in both guys and girls when they reach time for puberty. Estrogen levels begin to rise at this time. However, during menopause, estrogen levels begin to drop. Sometimes if menopause is hard on a woman, a doctor will recommend hormone therapy to help her with the drastic change in their body.
It seems as if hormones affect women more than anyone else. Women are often described by men as being ‘hormonal’. It can cause certain food cravings and some minor or major weight changes. Many people actually try to get rid of some excess weight by going on a ‘hormone diet’. As described by Dr. Oz, a main factor of this diet is “adding more protein to you daily food intake and getting more sleep” (Oz). By doing this, you are influencing the hormones that affect your metabolism and appetite. It increases your metabolism and in turn makes you feel less hungry.
As you may have heard or seen on the news lately, more and more foods are being injected with hormones. This is partially happening to help the foods to grow faster to help with the supply in demand for food and is also partially happening to help the food sell better. The extra hormones make the food appear more attractive and make more people want to buy it. The main foods that are injected with hormones are vegetables and steaks. Though to some this may seem like a good idea, it is causing some major health issues. This method of producing food has been proven unsafe and toxic for humans, yet we still continue to sell, buy, and eat these modified plants and steaks.
There comes a time in everyone’s life when their hormones do not function as properly as they once did. The process of our hormones decreasing is commonly referred to as aging, and most people do not like it. Most of them try many ways to hide it or get rid of it....
