To find her place in the world after going down the wrong way a young woman decides to hike the Pacific Crest Trail on her own to escape from reality and have time to think about what to do with her life. In her book Wild Cheryl Strayed talks about her life and all the problems she had since her mother’s death and how to try to find an answer to those problems she escaped to the Pacific Crest Trail to have time to think about those problems. She talks about her problems and mistakes without fear of being criticised but then she runs away from them instead of facing them.

After destroying her marriage on her own she decides to escape and ends up with a boyfriend that gets her into the world of heroin, so after destroying her life with the man she loved she decides that the best way to cope with that is to start hurting her own body to get those problems off her head. She tells us how she would never get addicted to it but ends up succumbing to the addiction, and when eventually she decides to quit, she falls back into it one last time. The same thing she did when she promised herself not to sleep with another man because she loved her husband Paul.
Once she can’t face reality anymore and has given up on any hope she decides to run away of that reality instead of fixing it by doing the PCT. She has no experience in hiking or any kind of physical exercise but still decides that putting herself thru the torment of the PCT instead of facing the problems she has brought on herself and try to fix them. Even when she finally gets there and decides to hike the PCT she is faced with a huge problem right from the beginning, the weight of Monster, right there she is already starting to think about running away again and giving up. Eventually she pulls herself together and starts her journey across the west side of the PCT.
During her journey she is faced with many other problems, especially physical pain, but she also faces all sorts of wild animals like a bear, a snake and a bull, and she gets over those problems with relative ease. Even when faced with a snow-covered trail she still found the bravery to face it with her basic knowledge in the art of using the ice ax, but then again once she feels that there is an obstacle too big for her to surpass instead of trying to get past it she decides to take the easy road and take detours around all of those things that seem too hard to do.
