She examined the screen carefully, looking for entrance ways and strategical places to set her portals to leave the testing room. Her hands gripped the mouse, running it back and forth on the desk. Deciding on a place, she clicked to set a portal and made her character leap through, completing the level and moving onto the next, and realized she had been able to clear this room much more quickly than the last. She had found success and problem solving skills through playing a video game. Although highly debated, video games have been shown time and time again to be beneficial. Video games are excellent because they improve coordination and problem solving skills, help with mental disabilities, and make people more creative.
Video games are known to help with problem solving skills and coordination. According to Isabela Granic, “The more adolescents reported playing strategic video games, such as role-playing games, the more they improved in problem solving and school grades the following year” (www.apa.org). Granic is stating that, through video games, students increase their ability to solve problems which, in turn, allows them to be able to receive better grades in school. In addition to higher problem solving, studies have shown that people who play first or third person shooter games such as Halo, Grand Theft Auto, and Call of Duty are better than non-gamers at processing three-dimensional objects (www.apa.org). Video games like League of Legends and other games that require strategies increase brain flexibility, meaning they are able to help one adapt quickly to changing situations and questions with a higher level of thinking (www.huffingtonpost.com) . In my opinion, after playing League of Legends and other shooter/strategy based games like Portal, I found myself doing better in Geometry, a class with which I had been having problems. Through video games, players can expect an increase in mental capability.
Video games can also help combat mental disabilities and disorders such as depression and dyslexia. In talking about video games in relation to her depression, Shenkar Vendatam quoted Gail Nichols as saying, “"In the day, you can find someone to talk to," ... "Games are a big help in getting through to the next morning” (www.washingtonpost.com). Nichols is stating that video games helped her get through the night while in a major depressive episode. Studies have also shown that playing faster-paced video games help children with dyslexia. To prove this, a study by the University of Padua showed that, by playing action games, children with dyslexia increased their reading comprehension in comparison to children that did not play video games and children who played slow-paced games (www.huffingtonpost.com). Recently, some researches in New Zealand started a video game called SPARX to help teenagers cope with depression and to recover from depression, and found that it did help more than the regular treatment of depression...
