How Can I Save The Planet

1541 words - 7 pages

America the motherland of capitalism, where the whole economy and our American way of life revolve around selling things, buying things, and throwing these things in the trash. It’s our sense of entitlement of living in this country that the people with money to spend have to spend because there is always something new coming out, so to feel important they have to have to get it. They see no problem with this because they just toss out the old and bring in the new, but this causes an enormous amount of pollution and eventually hurts everyone in the end in more ways than one.
I do not believe money is what brings people happiness I think it is helping out others. I could have tons money in ...view middle of the document...

Due to Americans excessive consumption and waste we cause three different types of pollution; land pollution, water pollution, and air pollution. In the case of land pollution by dumping all this garbage we are putting toxic substances into the ground that destroy the soil and vegetation around the area where it is being dumped. Land pollution can also cause water pollution because these toxic chemicals can seep into near by water sources. People and especially big businesses that feel entitled to do what they want when they want just because they have a ton of money dump chemicals, unwanted waste, and sewage into Americas water sources all the time. This is unacceptable because water is essential to human survival and there is less than 3% of water on earth that is safe to drink (http://www.pages.drexel.edu). This pollution then kills off organisms in the water that are essential to that habitat and subsequently the food chain all the way to humans. Lastly the most talked about kind of pollution is air pollution. Industry is the main contributor to air pollution. Because we live in a country where we feel entitled to buy so much then just throw it out there are always these big industries pumping out products, but at the same time they are pumping out harmful chemicals that we breath everyday. We are essentially killing our country, our planet, and eventually ourselves by this excessive consumption when we could be doing something as easy as recycling to significantly reduce this. “Of the garbage Americans throw out, half could be recycled, which is enough to fill a football stadium from top to bottom everyday” (http://students.arch.utah.edu). That is something to think about next time you just throw everything all in the trash when you could take a few extra seconds to drop it in the recycling bin.
This is not the direction we want to be going in we must change our ways before the Earth and environment around us change. The planet has so many natural beauties all over and those could all be gone or look a lot different if we do not start heading in another direction. I would love to see everything the Earth has to offer but I do not want to be one of the last people to enjoy those sights I want to pass down a healthy earth to my children and their children. In order to do that we as Americans need to stop being so wasteful.
Some might say that the reason we have more waste is because we are a more developed country and we are a country that produces more goods than a less developed country. It is true that we do produce a lot of goods and are the second largest in exports next to China, but since we are a more developed country we should be taking care of our waste like we are more developed. Instead we are disposing of our waste like barbarians by throwing it on the ground, digging gigantic holes and bearing it, and burning it. America is one of the most developed countries, if not the most, so we should dispose of the waste more...
