How Can Psychology Help Me In Medicine?

981 words - 4 pages

What is psychology? “Psychology is currently defined as the scientific study of behavior and mental processes” (Roesch). Psychology allows us to figure out what a person is feeling and going through psychologically and it seems like a vital subject for those that will have constant interactions with people. For example, lawyers, teachers, policemen and even doctors have daily interactions with people and yet many have not even given psychology a second though after taking an introductory class in high school or college. In the future as a medical practitioner, I will keep in mind that checking on a person’s mental and emotional state is just as important as checking on how a person is doing physically.
“In order to treat people effectively we need to be able to (I) diagnose the problem accurately and (II) treat that problem appropriately. Psychology can help in both these areas” (Ayers 9-10). Apart from checking a person’s mental state, understanding that people have unique personalities is just as important. By understanding a person’s personality, one can...
