How Can We Prevent Memory Loss? Is Soy the Answer?

Memory loss is associated with aging and dementia. Dementia is a neurodegenerative disease that occurs over a period of time and can be detected in an individual by a progressive loss of cognitive function. Cognitive function is defined as one’s ability to think, reason and remember. Over time, researchers have uncovered that dementia has been detected less frequently in individuals from East Asia than from those residing in the West. Could the differences in diet be the explanation for this disparity? It is estimated that Asian populations eat 10 to 40 times more soy than Westerners. Is there something in soybeans that provides ...view middle of the document...

Inflammation and loss of synapses are also contributing factors. Animal studies in rats have shown that genistein, one of the components of phytoestrogens, has a protective effect on neurons. In another study using mice, soy was shown to prevent memory deterioration along with reduced mortality related to Alzheimer’s disease. Further research has determined that the components of phytoestrogens, daidzein and genistein, have anti inflammatory effects, reduce the amount of neurofibrillary tangles. These substances also provide an antioxidant effect, which protects neurons in the brain. Other variables that need to be considered when trying to understand the value of soy include the type of soy and the amount of phytoestrogen consumed. These studies have all shown promise for the neuroprotective properties of phytoestrogens in animals, however, further research is needed to determine if these benefits translate to human brains.
In observational studies using human subjects, 3 out of 7 reviewed, determined that the isoflavones in phytoestrogens had positive effects on perception. One study compared the effects of eating tofu and tempe. Tempe is a fermented soy product. It was discovered that tempe contains significantly higher levels of folate and the isoflavones genistein and daidzein, compared to ordinary tofu made from boiled soybeans. The results of this study revealed a positive association between memory and tempe but did not find any benefits for those who consumed ordinary tofu. Perhaps it is the folate that provides the protection? Previous studies have suggested that folate does have favorable effects on brain function and could reduce the risk of dementia.
When examining a study that compared Asians with Non-Asians, it was suggested that perhaps the difference in memory protection reflected the particular types of soy that each population consumed. For example, the Asian population preferred soy beans, tofu and soy milk, and the Non-Asian population consumed more tofu and meat substitutes. The different compounds within the soy products may account for the differences in memory scores. Also, different populations may have different genetic capabilities in converting the isoflavones in soy into the bioactive metabolites that protect memory. That could provide one explanation for the differences in cognitive protection.
When reviewing the results of 12 randomized controlled trials, only half of those evaluated showed positive effects of isoflavones on cognition of post menopausal women. In the positive studies, the researchers determined that post menopausal women who were given soy...
