When I am on my phone at night, my mom will usually tell me to do something “productive.” Even when I say I finished all my homework, she’ll command me to read a book instead of using my phone or computer. Then she’ll go on about how she never had iPhones or laptops growing up and how she found other ways of entertainment, but I spare myself the usual boredom and do as she commands. However, I realized that reading a real book at night made me fall asleep a lot faster than playing on my cell phone at night. Blue light from computers and cellphones mimic sunlight which interfere with one’s circadian rhythm (which is the 24-hour cycle of all living things) and melatonin produce. "Because blue light is especially prominent in daylight, our bodies associate it with daytime, which may be why exposure to blue light can make us more alert and improve our response times. It also has been shown to suppress melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep and is not produced during the day… Your brain is more alert now and thinks it's daytime because we have evolved to only see bright light during the day” (Chicago Tribune Sleep Loss). For example, when you are in contact with the sunlight, your brain tells your body to stay awake because it is still day out. So even when you know it’s night time while still on your phone or computer, the brain will still feel the need to stay awake thinking it is daytime. Blue light is a big interference with your “body's biological clock.” Harvard Health Publications by Harvard Medical School highly suggest to “Avoid looking at bright screens beginning two to three hours before bed.” By doing so, this will trigger your brain to go to sleep faster knowing it is night time.
