The topic of discussion I will be writing about on this paper is how did the advent and expansion of Islam influence the nature of Russia and the Byzantine Empire? Throughout the course of this paper I will be showing examples of how Islam influenced the two. From showing what brought Islam to Russia and the Byzantine’s attention, to what they understood about it and how it affected the two regions. Also I will be explaining how the two became such close allies and friends because of Islam.
Islam had several different ways of growth in Anatolia (Turkey). Some may say that the growth was weak and ineffective, but that is not the case, in fact, that is the complete opposite. In the 14th and 15th century the Safavi and Bektas became rivals of the Ottoman Empire who were orthodox Muslims. They were all butting-heads and it seemed as if none of the Safavi than took over Iran and made it their own which made them more powerful. Since the Safavi was so powerful, in the 17th century they took over a lot and converted Anatolia to Islam ("Turkey").
There are many different disputes and history about the conflicts between Islam and the Byzantium. In 1453, enabled the ottomans to consolidate their empire. This caused great distress upon their empire. The Ottomans revived the title of caliph, based on their legitimacy of Islam. Another issue of conflict was that justice was dispensed by a religious court. This meant that the courts views were based upon the rules and regulations of Islam. To some people that was a little harsh but to others it was the right way of going about things. The codified system of seriat regulated all aspects of life. The codified system was like guidance for the people of the Ottoman Empire (Mayer).
Islam played a huge role in Russian history. There are few main points that show how big of a role Islam had in Russian history. The first Mongolian ruler whom embraced Islam was Berke Khan. After embracing Islam, the relationship between them and the largest “state” was very strong. They were very close and formed an alliance over time...
