How Differentiated Instruction Can Work And Fail In The Article Mapping A Route Toward Differentiated Instruction By Carol Ann Tomlinson

This article, named “Mapping a Route Toward Differentiated Instuction” by Carol Ann Tomlinson, is about differention, which means to form or mark differently from other such things (Collins, 2009). This paper talks about the difference between the three teachers they gives and their teaching style. They all are different, but the paper talks about how they show good or bad differentiated tatics. The first two teachers did not do it right according to the paper but the last teacher had no complants. According to the paper/ article to make good differentiation work the first step is to “know where you want to end up before we start out – and plan to get there.” (Tomlinson, 1999) which mean plan ahead. Carol Ann Tomlinson also talks about why or why not the teacher showed good or bad differentiation. She explained every step of her opinion with examples and answers to what she thought we might be thinking.
The main point of this article is to give you information on what is and what isn’t a good differentiation work. When you teach a class you have you have to know amny things before you start. One, where you want to end up after you end you journey. Two, you need to have a game plan. Don’t just go into the semester not knowing what to teach or making things up as you go, like teacher 2, Mrs. Baker. Three, where your students are so if you need to alter your plans you can. Not all plan or assessment is perfect but neither is every teacher but there is a right and wrong way to do differentiation work. In this article there are two bad ways and one good way. The bad ways given were the teachers 1 and 2, who are Mr. Appleton and Mrs. Baker. They were very unique teachers but didn’t follow the 3 steps that the last teacher did. The third teacher is Ms. Cassell. They all are teaching the same thing in their own teaching style. Although they were wrong in their way of differentiated work there is no wrong way to teach.
