Does Safflower Oil Target Belly Fat?

Researchers at the Ohio State University studied the health effects of safflower oil on obese postmenopausal women, with Type 2 diabetes and concluded that 1) safflower oil reduced abdominal fat and 2) increased lean muscle tissue. Their findings were published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

After taking controlled doses of safflower oil for 16 weeks, the women participants experienced an approximate 6.3% weight loss in the abdominal area. Additionally, their overall health improved, including better blood sugar levels.

Amazingly, the women did not change their diet or lifestyle. According to researchers this indicated people probably need more good fats in their diet.

Researchers compared effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and safflower oil. It had been determined in previous studies that CLA contributed to weight loss. However, finding a link between safflower oil and decreased belly fat rather shocked the researchers.

At that time, researchers made a conservative conclusion that people should include healthy oil in their daily diets, perhaps by cooking with or using oil and vinegar salad dressing.
