How Does Teen Suicide Affect Society?

2063 words - 9 pages

There are multiple negative effects of teen suicide. Large numbers of teens that do not have support from friends, peer groups, family, or religious association may and can feel isolated from the world and disconnected. (Larry’s). The tragedy of a young person dying as a result of overwhelming hopelessness is devastating to everyone. Suicide rates differ between boys and girls. Girls think about and attempt suicide about twice as often as boys, and attempt suicide by overdosing. Boys die by suicide about four times as often as girls, due to using more lethal methods, such as firearms, hanging, or jumping from heights. (Nock). There are several different factors that may lead a teenager to take their life, but the most common is depression. Feelings of hopelessness and anxiety, along with feelings of being trapped in a life that one cannot handle, are contributors to teen suicide. It is important to be on the lookout for signs that your teen may attempt suicide. Some of the warning signs are similar to normal adolescent behavior. At times, preventing teen suicide means treating teen depression. Since 75 percent of the people who commit suicide are depressed (according to the University of Texas), it is a beneficial start to begin treating the symptoms of teen depression. (Teen Suicide Overview).
The reasons behind a teen suicide or attempted suicide can be complex. Although, suicide is relatively rare among children, the rate of suicides and suicide attempts increases greatly during adolescence. The risk of suicide increases when kids and teens have access to firearms at home, and nearly 60 percent of all suicides in the United States are committed with a gun. That is why any gun in your home should be unloaded, locked, and kept out of the reach. Overdose using over-the-counter, prescription, and non-prescription medicine is also a highly common method. It is important to monitor all the medicines in your home. Suicide is the third-leading cause of death for 15 to 24 years old, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is also said that at least 25 attempts are made for every completed teen suicide. (Nock). It has been suggested, however, that suicide deaths have more similarities than differences with accidental deaths. Both occur suddenly and the survivors are given no chance to say bye, they learn of their loss by surprise, and they are not given a chance to adjust to a life without the deceased. Studies of family reactions following teenage suicide are bothered by the psychological difficulties of approaching the families. Nearly all interview studies involve samples that are either negotiated by a high weakening rate, or based on survivors who organize and work through the crisis. This study’s main purpose was to interview surviving family members that had lost a teenager by suicide to increase the understanding of the circumstances that these families are living under. (In the Aftermath). Karen Dunne-Maxim, who...
