How Has Technology Changed Communication? Essay

1228 words - 5 pages

“We barely have time to pause and reflect these days on how far communicating through technology has progressed. Without even taking a deep breath, we’ve transitioned from email to chat to blogs to social networks and more recently to twitter” (Alan 2007). Communicating with technology has changed in many different ways. We usually “get in touch” with people through technology rather than speaking with them face to face. The most popular way people discuss things, with another individual, is through our phones. Phones have been around way before I was born in 1996, but throughout the years, they have developed a phone called a “smart phone”. The smart phone has all kinds of new things that we can use to socialize with our peers. On these new phones, we can connect with our friends or family on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Technology has also developed Skype, a place you can talk with people on the computer with instant voice and video for hours. The new communication changes have changed drastically from the new advances made in technology through our smart phones, social networking sites, and Skype.
Technology has changed the way we communicate through our smart phones. These cordless phones have a variety of apps used to play games, maps, as musical players, alarm clocks, and even maintaining a healthy diet. Having all these fun things put all into one handheld device can come in handy in many situations, but it can put strain on your eyes and cause you to be something called isolated away from the world. It can also be distracting while sitting in a class; you pull your phone out and begin playing these games or amuse yourself with the collection of apps. I remember the first time getting a smart phone it was very confusing on how to control my phone, but I soon figured it out. When first using all these entertaining apps I became isolated from my close or even not so close friends; instead of talking to them face to face I would just do a thing called “hit them up on Facebook”. I think the new advances in technology have allowed this to happen, to loose your focus on work, on your friends, on your life. It has made it possible for us to be so called “glued” to something, it being an addiction to be emotionally connected with your cell phone. Us no longer associating with the people like we would before, us not being as active as the young kids were back in the day, and us beginning to be sucked into this world of technology whether than enjoy our life outside of our cellular device.
Secondly, technology has changed the way we communicate through social networking sites. When saying social networking sites I am talking about sites called Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. I asked a fellow friend what they think is the most popular social networking site, they went on to say, “I think Facebook is becoming more popular with older people, but younger people are moving away from it and fleeing to...
