How can hunger be reduced in the United States? In order to reduce hunger, every possible cause must be addressed. Climate changes, natural disasters, wars, and lack of aid are just a few causes of hunger and food insecurity. These issues can be dealt with nationally and locally. Nationally, there need to be programs and policies in place that give access to resources and the ability to sustain those efforts. To reduce hunger in local communities, more support needs to be given to farmers and markets, and there always needs to be access to food and aid.
There are national aid programs like SNAP, UN World Food Programme, and Feeding America, trying to reduce hunger by providing access to food, resources, and the means to keep up those efforts. Teaching people that having sustainable development is better than just relying on aid, is also very important.
A meeting of the UN Economic and Social Council noted that they need strong policies and contributions that will help to improve food security and nutrition. They want to focus on the current problem of erratic food prices and questions about the manufacturing, industry, and utilization of food in the long term. In order to ensure a future that is free from hunger for everyone, the meeting discussed program and policies that could be put in place. The council wants to find ways to lessen unnecessary food loss and waste. The problem of food insecurity has to be looked at in relation to environment, finances, and energy. The 3N initiative focuses on five strategies to improve food security. Those strategies are, “to increase and diversify production, enhance agricultural infrastructure, build resilience, improve nutrition, and create enabling environment to ensure stable and sustained production.” More focus must be put on creating the right policies, making sure they are carried out well, and seeing to it that they are sufficiently supervised. Women are believed to be integral in a solution to nutrition and food security, and if allowed to have access to food, could have more of an influence. There needs to be complete and full access to sanitary food and water (“FOCUS”).
The most important food aid program in the nation is SNAP, supplemental nutritional assistance. It helped nearly 46.6 million people in 2012. It has an incredible impact on poverty in the United States. Helped to decrease the number of poor people in America in 2011. A lot of people think that because SNAP is fairly generous with the benefit it gives, that it gives some people no incentive to work. Contrary to popular belief, though, SNAP does not give enough aid for someone to live comfortable without having a job. To many, SNAP is a temporary help when the income for the household is low (“HUNGER”).
More than 1 billion people in the world right now are suffering from hunger. Food security is “the access by all people at all times to the food needed for a healthy life,” as defined by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization....
