Tourism is majorly important in both MEDCs and LEDCs, as they are a way of economically developing the country. Tourism is one of the most worldwide industries in the world. Thailand is one of the most visited countries in South East Asia and the world, and this has benefitted Thailand with many advantages, but everything has disadvantages to them, even tourism. To be able to distinguish whether tourism is a good or bad thing for Thailand, we can separate the effects of tourism in three categories: economic, social and environmental impacts. Since economic impacts are first on the list, I will start explaining this first.
There are many economic impacts towards tourism. This can be proven by all the money the government collects through touristic industries, from hotel, restaurant, airport, sales, park entrance employee income tax and much more. In addition to this, tourists return to the country, so more and more money is received in the touristic industry. There is also the tourist multiplier effect, in which will increase the number of tourists due to other factors, and this can be seen as the tourist industry will help develop other industries in Thailand as well, which will all benefit tourists. Touristic industries has also offered many new jobs surround the industry and this has lifted out many people from unemployment. The money brought in from tourists has also greatly developed the infrastructure and sewage system in Thailand. Scuba diving and other water sports are attractive towards both tourists and citizens, either to do the activities or work to maintain it. Furthermore, Thailand has also become one of the best foreign exchange currencies in the world since 1982.
I think the most important impact is the reputation of Thailand and the tourist multiplier effect. This is because if Thailand has a good reputation, tourists would think that Thailand is a good place for a vacation, which will lead to the tourists enjoying their, causing the message will spread and this will lead to more and more tourists willing to spend their vacation in Thailand. Moreover, this is the most significant impact as it leads to the other impacts as increased taxes would not occur if there was not a raise in tourists, as well as increase in employment, improved infrastructure and sewage systems. Since more and more tourists will be interested in the touristic attractions in Thailand, the number of tourists will increase, and so Thailand will experience a quick growth in its economy.
Although there are many economic benefits, there are several costs towards it as well. This can be demonstrated by although many jobs are offered and it decreases the unemployment rate, these jobs are seasonal. This means that since tourists come particularly during the winter months due to the tropical climate in Thailand, these jobs that are taking part in the touristic industry are only profitable during these months, and so may be insufficient for citizens to live off.
