E- commerce began to develop in 1999, and even MySpace came into its own. By 2006 there were nearly 92 million live websites on the Internet. The Internet is a portal into a different way of doing business, organizing our daily lives, and entertaining. All of these points are background of how the Internet started and has evolved into the super beast that it is today. The Internet has extended deep into the business process. It has altered the way information is processed, how companies interact with its consumers, how companies manage day-to-day tasks with in a business, and how a business grows and markets to its consumers. If there were no Internet, there would be no need for a Management Information Systems class.
According to Google.com a management information system is “a computerized information-processing system designed to support the activities of company or organizational management.” These systems can store and organize data, contain decision support systems, and consist of applications that help with the management of people and projects. Even though information systems are still doing what they were designed to do for 50 years, the evolution of the systems has made them more efficient in ways like greater connectivity, and a higher integration of systems functions.
One way that businesses are taking advantage of the Internet is by integrating internal social media sites. These sites allow managers and their employees to access each other and information relevant to the business. Employees can approach managers in a non-intimidating setting in order to have their questions or concerns answered. The social media sites allow employees to have a voice in the company by being able to ask questions and voice concerns about on going projects or day-to-day tasks. There are many kinds of management information systems including, enterprise, Internet, transaction processing, decision support, customer relationship, all of these systems benefit from the Internet with real time updates, speedy responses and data acquirement.
With the use of the Internet, the development of these information systems has progressed greatly. The Internet has provided a way for users working with information to not have to work with several different platforms that present the information. The Internet makes it seem like the user is only using one system to process the information. The Internet has provided quality such as faster processing, considerable accuracy, and reliability, which benefit many information systems and the companies using them.
