Through the classes I have taken at Bowie State University and my experiences in the classroom, I have developed a personal teaching philosophy that will be implemented into my future classrooms. I am continually being prepared for an inclusive classroom, and plan on consistently considering students’ individual needs in my instruction.
It is my belief that each child is a unique individual, in need of a secure, caring and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my aspiration as an educator to help students meet their fullest potentials in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. In order to achieve this, I believe the teacher needs to act as a guide and facilitator, allowing the students’ natural curiosity to direct his or her learning while promoting respect for all things and all people. Through this guidance, student’s search for knowledge is met as they learn to find answers to their questions. During this process, they learn to construct their own knowledge by discovering for themselves and practicing skills in authentic situations. Providing students access to hands-on activities and allowing ample time and space to use materials that reinforce the lesson creates an opportunity for individual discovery and construction of knowledge to occur.
In addition to the important self-discovery process, students need to be allotted opportunities to study things that are both meaningful and relevant to their own lives and interests. Developing lessons based on student interests promotes intrinsic motivation and stimulates the passion to learn. This can easily be achieved by conducting student interest surveys or through simple student dialogue, and constructing lessons with the information obtained in mind.
