How To Save A Life Essay

1542 words - 7 pages

Help wanted! I have become a personal therapist for my friends and other people, whether they are bullied or just simply frustrated. After growing up with no friends, I understood some things about relationships and how to deal with personal problems. Although, most of the time I cannot seem to follow my own advice, I try to help others who need the help because that is what I have always thought friends did. Since I started helping others, I found that I myself was being helped along the way. With not only my own experiences, I was starting to learn that there was more to living life than simply being able to interact- It all depended upon how you reacted.
At first, I thought ...view middle of the document...

And something else I did, as well as still do, was sing their favourite songs to them. I tried to make them smile or even laugh with that one, depending on what the song was. But the thing is, none of these would work because I wasn’t sure what I could do to make sure they were listening. I gave advice, but they either ignored it or it didn’t work for them. I got confused, even though I tried to understand, because they never did tell me their full problem- only a small fraction of it. Or I was even just told “Thanks Becka” by a friend with a fake smile before they wallowed in their own little pity party, but that was because they didn’t think anything would work.
Quitting is always an option, but never the best one. Although my first attempts at cheering my friends up would fail more often than naught, I tried to find other ways to make them smile again. I talked with people older than me. A 21 year old young man named Zion Hitokiri is one of the people I often asked advice from myself. He would often suggest things for me to do to make my friends smile, things that seemed silly. I started to act like a fool when I saw them frown, using different voices and accents to make them smile. I’d give them advice for their relationships, something I thought silly because I had never been in an actual relationship before now. A friend of mine overseas would often ask me, “Why are men such idiots?’ I can honestly say that even now, I could never answer her on that. Another common statement my friends haven given me was, “Don’t worry about me, I’m fine” when I knew for a fact that everything was not fine. I didn’t understand before as to why they said that- was it because they wanted to hide their pain or was it because they wanted you to care? I think it was for both reasons. How could I help my friends, though when I couldn’t tell they were harming themselves? Another friend of mine, a girl from Arizona who likes being called Lola even though her name is Lauren, told me a year back she was cutting. I was shocked was an understatement. I was horrified that such a sweetheart would end up hurting herself instead of going to me or someone else. I was glad, though, that she came to me about it. So rather than failing one part of my mission, I did gain good results that tempered my bad ones.
I was close to resigning to failure many times, though. But every time I wanted to, I ended up thinking of my friends and how they wouldn’t give up so easily on me. But several years later, I realized that because of my help- they would end up helping me too. I had started to sink into a deep depression, something that would happen sometimes since I wasn’t on medicine for my bipolar disorder even though I’m still not on any medicine for it. But this one seemed to be the worst with timing and the intensity, it happened when I was in the beginning stages of finding out about my illness and...
