How To Take To Girls Essay

1204 words - 5 pages

“Don’t judge a book by its cover,” is a common lesson taught to children as young as grammar school. Kids are told that what a person may look like on the outside, does not relate to the person they are in on the inside. In the short story, “How to Talk to Girls at Parties”, this theme is relevant. The two main characters Enn and Vic are both attending the same party, but react differently when it comes to interacting with the girls that are there. Vic feels that women are equal to him and he is very knowledgeable when it comes to how to act around them. He has many girlfriends and finds it easy to talk to females. Enn on the other hand, spends most of the night talking to a few girls, but ...view middle of the document...

Vic realizes that it is important to learn how a woman feels about things on a deeper level. Neil Gaiman used their differences to his advantage when writing this short story. He was able to compare and contrast how these two very different men portrayed different groups of men and women in the real world.
Although the story was told from a male perspective, the same goes for females. Being judged on ones appearance is a horrible truth of reality. In the short story, Enn walks the reader through what he is thinking when he sees the females. When walking into the party, Enn sees a few girls and sits down with one of the girls and immediately comments on her appearance. Enn states “She smiled, and looked down and away, perhaps bashfully. Her profile was almost flat -- a perfect Grecian nose that came down from her forehead in a straight line. We did Antigone in the school theater the previous year. I was the messenger who brings Creon the news of Antigone's death. We wore half-masks that made us look like that” (Gaiman). Enn let what his eyes saw receive higher importance than the woman’s personality. Enn does not take the time to get to know her first before making assumptions about how she is based on how she looks. This happens far too often, in almost every situation when two people are meeting for the first time. One of the most important events that has two people meeting for the first time, is a job interview.
At a job interview, it is important for one to look their best. For example, if one person shows up in a suit and tie their chances of landing that job are far more increased than if they showed up in ripped jeans. Although their personality may not be great, their looks captured the employer before their personality could. I experienced a similar situation at a soririty meeting The clothing attire was to dress nice and no jeans. I showed up in a nice top and black pants, while another girl showed up in a sweatshirt and jeans. I was complimented on my outfit and the person talking to me seemed extremely interested. Although it made me feel honorable, but the other girl’s self esteem was lowered and same with her confidence....
