How To Write A Resume Essay

1400 words - 6 pages

A resume is the first opportunity that potential employer has to get to know about you, therefore also the most important opportunity you have to show off your skills without sounding too arrogant and stand out in front of potentially hundreds of other applicants. A resume is basically a description of your background, skills, and accomplishments; it also tells who you are, what you want to do, and what you have to offer. To accomplish this goal you want to focus on the five main part of making a resume: employment objective, past experiences, skills, references, and format.
The employment objective is a crucial topic that a lot of people often overlook. In these short two to three sentences you need to convince the employer you want to make a career out of your position and that you want to be there for the long run. This of course depends on what type of job you are applying for; you still need to establish your seriousness and commitment to the position. Starting off with a simple phrase such as “Looking to obtain and secure a ____ position in_____” can make all the difference; it’s short, sweet, and straight to the point. Another central topic that needs to be addressed is that you want to make the most of the skills you already have, which leads to learning new skills on the job and furthering your knowledge in the field. These few sentences which look so simple can really set a lot of people apart from their competition.
Past work experiences are the final thing employers will check before they hire you, but what if you don’t have any? Everyone has to start somewhere. If you are trying to get your first job it’s more reasonable to have something that says a lot about your character than nothing at all. Including small things in this section such as any clubs you’ve been a part of or any volunteering experience you might have, shows the employer that you can work as part of a team and are thoughtful of others. In it you should include what the organization was; book club, local soup kitchen, etc., what your role was, and how your part in it helped others. It is essential to fill out this section the best you can if you have no prior work experience. However, if you already had a previous job, the format is a little bit different. State the name of the company, left aligned, state the city and state of the location, right aligned, and below that state the date of your employment, again on the left. Below that, depending on how many positions you held there, state your position and follow it with a nice sized paragraph describing what you were responsible for. Describing the position can also be a challenge. You need to make it sound as though the company couldn’t function without your being there, but you also cannot blow it out of proportion and sound too egotistical. No matter how small or menial your position was, you can still make it sound essential, and that’s the key that will sway employers. You just need to be prepared to back it...
