The Psychological Contract represents, in a basic sense, the obligations, rights, rewards, etc., that an employee believes he/she is 'owed' by his/her employer, in return for the employee's work and loyalty. It can best be explained by the following diagram:According to this diagram, we can draw that the construction and reconstruction of psychological contract between employee and employer can be affected by internal or external factors of the organization and environment. There are partitioned into 3 groups: causes, content, consequences.In this answer, we will use "Data Unlimited" as a sample to analysis each one thoroughly. 1.Causes: Involvement climate: In "Data Unlimited", employees are lack of involvement. From the start the company's core values were established to drive a unified corporate culture across all business units in all of the global locations. They also drive a culture of excellence in work. The core values are instilled in all employees, being taught in corporate induction, printed on employee discount cards and used as behavioural competency criteria in performance reviews, however recently it has been shown, through exit interview analysis, that many employees do not know what the values are, they would not be able to recite them if asked, and would not know what they stood for or the meaning behind them.Bureaucratic climate: After merger, the decision making mode of Data unlimited is so centralized that weaken the authority of business unit managers. In fact, although this centralization will help top management to take control the company. However, it caused frustrated to unit managers and employees.Expectations: In Data Unlimited, top management had some positive effects from the merger for employees. There has been an introduction of a more favourable new flexible benefits package, offering staff a range of benefits that previously were not available, or that employees were not originally entitled to. It is welcome to employees, but not enough, employees ask for more positive strategies.2. Content: Trust: According to the case, Data Unlimited lose the trust of its employees. The merger increased turnover in the way of compulsory redundancies and close down some unprofitable areas.
