Humulin N U-100 Insulin
What Is Humulin N Insulin?
“U-100 means it has 100 unites of insulin per milliliter of fluid (“Insulin Basics – American Diabetes Association.”).
What is its history?
How did its name originate?
How does it work?
Humulin N U-100 Insulin helps control blood sugar in dogs and cats with Type 1 diabetes. Diabetes is a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose levels that result from defects in the body’s ability to produce and/or use insulin (Diabetes Basics – American Diabetes Association.”). Glucose is a simple sugar that is an energy source for the body. After digestion, glucose enters the bloodstream and goes to cells throughout the body where it is used for energy. There has to be insulin in order for glucose to enter the cells. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas. When the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the cells do not use the insulin properly, diabetes develops. Type 1 diabetes is caused when the body’s own immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Therefore, the body does not produce any insulin. Humulin N U-100 Insulin “is used to take the place of insulin that is normally produced by the body. It works by helping move sugar from the blood into other body tissues where it is used for energy. It also stops the liver from producing more sugar (“Insulin Injection.”). Humulin N U-100 is intermediate-acting insulin. It starts working in about 1-2 hours after injection and lasts up to 24 hours. Dogs and cats usually receive insulin injections twice a day, once after breakfast and after dinner.
What does it look like?
Humulin N U-100 insulin is in a small glass bottle with a rubber top. It is a milky/cloudy liquid.
How does it resemble or differ from something else?
Humulin N U-100 is similar to all other insulin but it has a slower onset time (amount of time is takes to be absorbed and start lowering blood glucose). The slower onset time causes it to be effective longer in the body compared to others such as: insulin lispro, Humulin R and Novolin R. This insulin must also be refrigerated, whereas other types of insulin are stored at room temperature.
