Maatschappelijke Kwestie: Euthanasie
Het probleem
De kwestie waar ik me graag in wil verdiepen is het euthanasievraagstuk; is het nou wel of niet ethisch verantwoordt. Mag de mens wel voor Godje spelen?
Ik vind euthanasie een mooi onderwerp omdat het naast een maatschappelijke en sociale kwestie ook een onderwerp is wat heel diep gaat; over leven en dood, dat eigenlijk, wat de mens het meeste bezighoudt. En het vraagstuk over het beëindigen van leven is waarschijnlijk al zo oud als de mens.
Ten tweede staat dit vraagstuk ook redelijk dicht bij mij; aangezien mijn opa euthanasie gepleegd heeft...

Euthanasie, het lijkt eigenlijk een persoonlijk probleem. Het gaat toch om het leven van één persoon? Maar als je nagaat wat er voor procedures in gang worden gezet wanneer iemand een moord pleegt; `de hele maatschappij' is betrokken bij deze zaak. Zo is dat ook bij euthanasie, dit is namelijk niets anders dan `legale' moord.

En om mijn verhaal te bevestigen wil ik de kwestie graag toepassen op de definitie van maatschappelijke problemen die op pagina 6 van het boek beschreven staat.
1. De beslissingen en wetsvoorstellen over euthanasie hebben wel degelijk invloed op grote groepen in de samenleving (degenen die het ondergaan, de nabestaanden, de gelovigen enz)
2. Ook wordt de mogelijkheid tot het plegen van euthanasie veroorzaakt door maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen; als de kerk nog steeds zoveel invloed had gehad op de regering als 100 jaar geleden, dan zou ik hier nu geen werkstuk over schrijven; zelfdoding zou niet eens denkbaar zijn. Conclusie is dus dat de normen en waarden veranderen.
3. Het probleem; mag het nu wel of niet, moet zeker maatschappelijk opgelost worden, al vraag ik me af of dat werkelijk mogelijk is. Men moet in ieder geval proberen alle partijen zo veel mogelijk tevreden te stellen met weloverwogen wetten en regels.
4. En of er tegengestelde belangen zijn! Ik noem de kerk en de patiënt...
Dit alles lijkt mij reden genoeg om het probleem rond euthanasie een maatschappelijk vraagstuk te noemen.

Feitelijke informatie
Wat houdt euthanasie nou eigenlijk precies in?
Letterlijk vertaald betekend het woord `goede dood' in het oud-Grieks. Bij euthanasie is sprake van zelfmoord met de hulp van een ander, meestal een arts, het moet werkelijk compleet vrijwillig zijn. Als je echt niet meer wil leven, of kunt leven, maar jouw `tijd' officieel nog niet gekomen is; kun je hulp bij zelfdoding vragen.
Maar zo simpel als het lijkt, is het in werkelijkheid zeker niet. Er zijn een aantal strenge regels gebonden aan het plegen van euthanasie, en dat is maar goed ook!

Theoretisch mag je alleen euthanasie plegen als je situatie uitzichtloos is en je in een ondraaglijk lijden verkeert.
Dit zijn de eisen die volgens de wet aan het proces gesteld moeten worden alvorens de behandeling uitgevoerd mag worden;
• er moet sprake zijn van een vrijwillig en weloverwogen verzoek van de patiënt;
