I Don't Have One Essay

880 words - 4 pages

The civil rights movement was a nonviolent campaign against racism that sought equality through integration and took place in the 1960s, while black nationalism was a more aggressive movement that sought equality through separation and took place alongside the civil rights movement. It was necessary to determine whether I would support the civil rights movement or black nationalism if I had been in that time period. If I were to try and take control of something away from someone, they would argue against that. In his speech The Ballot or the Bullet, Malcolm X says “Join any kind of organization, civic, religious, fraternal, political, or otherwise that’s based on lifting the black man up and making him master of his own community.” Here he is advocating any organization that gives control to ‘the black man,’ and takes control away from the white majority. Therefore the white majority was more likely to oppose the black nationalist movement because it involved taking control away from them. And, for any political movement, opposition from a majority decreases the likelihood of success.
The third and final reason the civil rights movement was more likely to succeed than the black nationalist movement is that the civil rights movement had a goal of understanding between all peoples, which, if successful, would decrease tensions between them. Almost all conflicts are due, in part, to misunderstanding. If one person understands why another is doing something illogical, then the first would be able to empathize with the second and would be less likely to aggress them. Therefore, the second ‘won’ the engagement in a way, since they would be able to continue whatever it is that they were doing. One of Martin Luther King Jr’s six principles of nonviolence states “Nonviolence seeks to win friendship and understanding.” This is basically saying what I said earlier: the civil rights movement has a goal of understanding. If the civil rights movement had a goal of understanding, and mutual understanding between opposing sides leads to the end of the opposition, then the civil rights movement was more...
