In Tennessee William's The Glass Menagerie and in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, the characters endure similar crises. In Death of a Salesman, the protagonist, Willy Loman, is in a crisis of interrelated events: he is a salesman who has lost his wage and is not making enough off of commision to pay his bills, he has an unhealthy relationship with his son, Biff, and he is regretful of the decision he has made in the past to have an affair. Similarly, in The Glass Menagerie, the protagonist, Tom, finds himself in a conflict with his family, as he is not allowed the freedom he wishes even though he has to pay the rent. As an example, the night he arrives home and it is established that work is unsatisfactory, and that he is not well as he is acting very bitter. That same night he does not go to bed, but daydreams about an earlier time when his sons are in university, when the sun is shining and things are not always going as well as he wished, but are nonetheless better than they are at present. Tom escapes to the movies the same way Willy daydreams: they wish to escape from their present troubles, and neither of their methods solve the actual problem, they only escape for a time until they are right back where they started. Their attempts at escape – as well as illuminate their dissatisfaction with life – become all they turn to for a peace of mind rather than a permanent solution.
The last dramatic moment is created towards the end of both pieces with an inconsiderate escape on the part of both protagonists.
