What I Have Learned In English 111

1521 words - 7 pages

With my first semester as a college student coming to an end, I can honestly say I have gained so much knowledge and this has been a major eye opening experience. By being in your English 111 class, I have learned a great deal about myself as a writer and a communicator. English used to be a subject I took for granted because I always considered it to be easy and there wasn’t much to it. You have helped me realize that in order to write a good paper, it is important to have a deeper understanding of the many structures and usages; as well as a better understanding of yourself and your audience. In what seems like such a short time, I have learned about rhetorical knowledge, the writing process, oral communication, critical thinking/reading/writing, and digital technology.
One of the very first things I learned was rhetorical knowledge, which is the means of understanding communication and how to communicate better. What really helped me understand this concept was the rhetorical triangle (insert link to notes). I now have a better understanding of how to communicate better throughout my writing. I can use my purpose as an author to craft a message that will influence my audience and meet their expectations. I have been using this knowledge in my other classes and I have seen improvement; for example, with my SDV portfolio (insert hyperlink) I met the expectations of Professor Morrison and received a god grade. That is proof of my hard work and understanding of rhetorical knowledge. Another concept we went over was the Appeals triangle (insert notes). With that I learned about Ethos, Pathos, and logos. Ethos is gaining trust with your audience. Pathos is the ability to feel the audience’s emotions and place that within your work, lastly, logos is showing your logic and knowledge behind your writing. Both rhetorical and appeals concepts have really helped me improve my writing and communication.
Another thing I have learned that has helped improve my writing is the writing process (insert notes). There are five steps to the writing process; the include prewriting, drafting, revision, proofreading, publishing, and review. In prewriting, you study your audience’s expectations, needs, and desires. Prewriting is a very important step because it helps organize all thoughts and ideas (insert prewriting example). My favorite form of prewriting is the mind map (insert mind map). For me, it is an easier way of organizing my ideas. Once prewriting is done, you start the next step which is drafting. The way you taught us how to draft is by drafting in sections. The next step in the writing process is revision (insert revised draft), which is adding to, cutting from, restating, and reorganizing. Revising is important for anyone who rushes through their papers, because it is crucial that you eliminate all mistakes. Proofreading is similar to revising, except it is making sure you have all the correct grammar, spelling, and format. You gave us a...
