I think this book is a tragedy.
Comedy as a drama genre,originally produced in ancient Greece. In the Comedy, the protagonist in a funny or humorous style,may be ugly or withdrawn, for showing the beauty or the sad of our life. Comedy can be divided into Satirical comedy, Lyrical comedy, Absurd comedy and farce. There are many famous comedy writers, like Aristophanes, W.WilliamShakespeare, Carlo Goldoni, and Friedrich Durrenmatt and so on.
In the Tragedy, the protagonist mostly stands for ideal and wish of the public. Tragedy ended by tragic end, for revealing sin of life. So they can arouse grief and indignation. Tragedy can be divided into Hero tragedy, Family tragedy and Destiny tragedy. There are also many famous tragedy writers, like Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and W.WilliamShakespeare.
In my opinion, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian is a tragedy. We can see the image of Postindian Warrior in this book. “Postindian Warrior” coined by Gerald Vizenor.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian is fourth novel of Sherman Alexie. This book won the Nation Book Award in 2007. Arnold Junior Spirit, the protagonist of this novel, went across the boundary of retained, entered the white school--- Reardan High School for studying. Through communicating with the white, Arnold successfully showed the new image of the Indians. He got respect and recognition from others. By this way, it also promoted communication and integration between Indian nation and the white mainstream society.
Arnold went across the boundary of retained, which was a risk-taking, might have unpleasant or undesirable results. This action was full of heroism. The white limited the retained area for Indians. The white hoped that Indians live in the area and not go out any more. The area just like a backwater, most Indians felt lonely, depressed and hopeless. They were backward and poor, but can not do anything. Poor made them lost dignity. So in this area, Arnold acted as a hero. Even in Reardan High School, which 22 miles away from that area, Arnold acted perfectly to be a super shinning star.
