I Wrote Of Bells That Ring Of Madness

1199 words - 5 pages

From day one we are taught to accept what is going on, and just have faith that it will all work out in the end. Parents look at you with the smile on their face when the one that you love dies, and state, “Everything happens for a reason.” With this statement we find comfort, yet we never wonder why. As children grow into young adults and even into adulthood, the statement, “That’s just how it is” gets used more often than the words “I love you.” When asking a question of great thought, many people turn to the same ‘getaway’ answer and don’t bother to worry about why. As a generation of aspiring youths, we should be expanding our horizons to further than just, “That’s what we ...view middle of the document...

Yet, just like the hungry and the homeless, the bells, and the pain, still endure. Poe has chosen to take off the goggles of misconception and shine light on the subjects that are dark. One of the greatest inspirations of all time provides one the most famous lines across the world. Michael Jackson sings, “I see the kids in the streets with not enough to eat, who am I to be blind? Pretending not to see their needs…” Later in the song, Jackson adds, “There are some with no home, without a nickel to loan. Could it be, really me, pretending that they’re not alone?” Our society as a whole has come to the conclusion that if I say it doesn’t exist, then by all means concerned, it doesn’t exist. Ninety percent of the time, the things we say don’t exist, are the things that hurt, and bring sorrow. However, in this blackhole of the blind, Edgar Allen Poe has found a way to see past the fog of pain, and present the truth; life.

One of my favorite poems, is Emily Dickinson’s “Much Madness Is Divinest Sense” because of the brutal truth it displays. Much like what Poe show’s with his “Bells”, Emily Dickinson uses her words to explain the fact that what the world portrays as one way, may be the complete opposite. While many people are busy deciding what is right and what is wrong in the world, there are few people that manage to get past the barrier of incompetence and climb to the top of the beam to see the land for what it really is. This voyage is long and hard, so therefore the majority of people don’t bother to attempt the trek. There are a handful of people that have a grip on reality, and this grip is not the grip of man, but rather from the hand of God. These are the people that realize ‘pretty’ isn’t beautiful and ‘smart’ isn’t intelligent. Emily Dickinson reveals this epiphany with her works of “Much Madness Is Divinest Sense.” Dickinson writes, “Assent- and you are sane- Demur- you’re straightway dangerous- And handled with a Chain.” Hidden behind the mask of reality, Dickinson publishes words of what the world claims as ‘madness’. Yet, this ‘madness’ is the wisdom I spoke of earlier. What the world calls dangerous and insane, I claim to be the truth. Crazy, isn’t it? Some might even say it’s madness.
