Immigration Is Overall Bad For America

1877 words - 8 pages

The first wave of 5 million people came from 1815 to 1860. More recently, from 1990 to 2000, 33 million people were added to the U.S. population, 40% from immigration. That's 13 million, 200 thousand people!*On a first visit to the United States in search of the "real America," foreigners find the U.S. to be a "foreign country." As they travel, they find Chinese in Chinatown in San Francisco, Koreans in Korea Town in Los Angeles, Italians in Little Italy in Manhattan, and Cubans in Little Havana, Miami. Instead of being the good ole' USA, we've become a foreign nation! The old song used to say, "God bless America." Now, we're not sure what to ask Him to bless! It's a mess!* My first point is that Immigration costs our country a lot of money.- You may remember, I mentioned there were 13.2 million immigrants entering the US from 1990 to 2000. Do you know what this cost our country? It required 4.8 million more housing units, 6.3 million more cars that consumed 330 million more barrels of oil a year; and over 6 million acres more of forest was needed to supply them with paper and wood.-Not to mention that the cost of printing up separate forms, materials, signage, audio phone messages, etc. to accommodate these non-English speaking people costs our country over 15 million dollars! That's 15 million dollars we wouldn't have to spend if these foreigners would stay in their own country!!!- When legal immigrants pass the border, 93 percent of them settle in major metropolitan areas, such as, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Miami, Houston, San Diego, and Philadelphia. Have you wondered why places like New York and California are so crowded? Well, now you know one reason why, because immigrants choose to settle there. And these immigrants then tax every area of our country's infrastructure (labor, medical, transportation, and other government services, etc).- And because immigrants flock to big cities, the welfare burden is huge. Such concentration places an overwhelming burden on them because states pay the bulk of money for providing services like AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children), SSI (Supplemental Security Income), medical care, and general assistance. For example, the cost in Calif. for these benefits was over 1 billion dollars.- In 2002 alone, 23% of all births in the US were to legal or illegal immigrant mothers. Often illegals will wait till they cross the border to have their baby so that their baby will be a US citizen and so it will be easier for them to become naturalized citizens. Most of the immigrants come poor and so do not have medical insurance! It cost nearly $20,000 to treat a baby born prematurely and nearly 10,000 for a full-term baby. Dozens of hospitals in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, have been forced to close or face bankruptcy because of federally-mandated programs requiring free emergency room services to those who can't afford it.- In summary of this point, FAIR research showed that...
