Research currently done in the field of biotechnology is aimed at producing crops that will have high yields through the use of genetically modified foods. Genetic engineering comprises of selective breeding that allows manipulation of genes either by altering or removing genes (Oniang'o, 2011, p.2). The impact of genetically modified foods on agricultural productivity and poverty eradication has for a long time been a source of controversy (Grushkin, 2012, p.18). Increase in production quantities are expected to lower food prices either at a local or global level, only if the countries are open to agricultural trade agreements. Innovations of genetically modified foods with improved agronomic traits strive to increase at farmer profitability, basically by reducing input costs and requirements (Magdoff & Tokar, 2009 p.2). Genetic modified foods can also be used to enhance the quality characteristics of a plants and animals. This is advantageous to the consumer, food processing firms and livestock producer.
The socio economic benefits achieved from the use of genetically modified foods are extensive. The food processing industries and milk processing firms have adequate supply of food since genetically modified foods grow very fast in large quantities, have high content in nutritional value and are of high quality. These industries provide constant labour market for the surrounding communities hence there is more income, increase in the amount of disposable income and improved living standards (Oniang'o, 2011, p.3).
Employment creation is very important in poverty and hunger eradication. The revenue received can be used for the construction of health centers, bore holes, institutional and learning centers and infrastructure improvements (Magdoff & Tokar, 2009 p.8). All this are ways through which multiplier effects of genetically modified foods can be felt. For instance biotechnology application in rice production in Asia and biotechnology coffee production in Ethiopia has made considerable contribution to amount of income and food security to the households who have greatly benefited (Grushkin, 2012, p.11).
There is a gap between economic benefits and of genetically modified goods. There has been limited research in this area which is very important in solving poverty and hunger problems.
